Megan Black has her arm raised winning a match at the Iowa state wrestling championships

The movement, which lasted a moment, will be a permanent part of state history.

The Eddyville-Blakesburg 106-pound junior became the first female to win a contested match at the Iowa state wrestling tournament Thursday night with a 10-0 major decision over Jacob Schmit of Don Bosco of Gilbertville.

"I'm happy," Black said. "I guess I got a win but I wish I would have finished stronger."

Black, a two-time state qualifier, joined Cedar Falls' Cassy Herkelman as the first two girls to qualify for the state tournament last season.

Black lost both of her matches. Herkelman's first contest drew national attention when her opponent, Joel Northrup of Linn-Mar of Marion refused to compete with her, defaulting his first-round match at 112 pounds.

The default became the subject of a national debate, with ESPN.com's Rick Reilly writing a column on the decision and Northrup appearing on ABC's Good Morning America.

Black now has her time in the sun, becoming the first girl to win a competitive match.

She left little doubt, putting Schmit on his back in the closing seconds of the first period, just missing a pin, settling for a 5-0 lead.

Black advances to Friday's Class 1-A quarterfinals.

"I hope to go out and win my one again tomorrow and just keep it going," she said.
