The Lakewood Cinderella story stuns Pomona, Tigers advance to 5A title game
LAKEWOOD - The tenth ranked playoff teams aren't supposed to make it to the state championship game. /p>
But the Lakewood Tigers aren't the average No. 10.
A week after knocking off Grand Junction, the No. 2 team in the state, the Lakewood football team beat third-ranked Pomona, 29-23, at Jefferson County Stadium Friday night.
The Tigers held a 16-0 halftime lead before allowing the Panthers to come all the way back to tie the game at 23 in the fourth quarter.
Lakewood's most valuable player, senior John Greer, scored his third touchdown of the night on a 46-yard game-winning run with less than a minute left.
After a dramatic series of called-back touchdowns, penalties and timeouts, Lakewood's defense was able to hold Pomona scoreless on their final drive.
After losing in the first round of the playoffs a season ago, the Tigers will play in their first state championship game since 1985.
