Shreve flashes big-play ability
Captain Shreve used some big plays and took advantage of Southwood mistakes in holding off the Cowboys 26-19 in jamboree action at Independence Stadium Friday night./p>
With both teams coming out and scoring on their first possessions it looked as if it would be the team that came up with the big defensive play would come out ahead.
Shreve got that big defensive play but it was a 90-yard kickoff return by Everette Payne that ended up being the biggest play for the Gators. Payne staked Shreve to a seemingly comfortable 26-6 lead at the start of the second half.
The big defensive play for the Gators came when defensive back Wade Hall returned a fumble 69 yards for a score on Southwood's second possession of the night. The score gave the Gators a 14-6 lead after both teams had scored on initial possessions.
Southwood suffered other problems as well on the night with a number of high snaps from center in its shotgun formation. Captain Shreve took advantage of a bad snap on a Southwood punt to gain possession at the Southwood 17.
Two plays later Shreve quarterback Zach Savoie found Marvin Davis for a 12-yard score. The extra point failed but the Gators led 20-6.
"I was real proud of our intensity coming out," said Shreve coach Richard Lary. "I thought Zach (Savoie) did a real good job in his first start. He made some good decisions."
Trailing 26-6, Southwood cut into the lead by scoring on its first possession of the second half. Jonathan Petteway bulled his way into the end zone from the 4 and the extra-point kick made it 26-13.
The Cowboys wouldn't go away easy, though, scoring on a pass from quarterback Chester Bates to KaBroderick Mitchell with just a little over a minute to play to pull within 26-19.
"I think we saw where we need to get some work," said Southwood coach Brian Taylor. "Taking care of the football on offense. We had several bad snaps that really hurt us, it put us in some second and long situations."
"Overall I think Chester Bates did a good job completing the ball to Jeremy (Washington) and KaBroderick (Mitchell) they did a good job getting open on the seams."
Bates finished the night hitting on 16 of 30 passes for 191 yards and two scores. Mitchell caught four passes for 51 yards and Washington had six catches for 83 yards.
Southwood scored on its first possession on a nice catch and run by Denzell Hughes of 25 yards. The extra point was no good and the Cowboys. Bates was 3-of-4 passing for 50 yards in the drive that took just five plays and covered 56 yards.
Shreve countered with a five play drive of its own with Terrell Jordan scoring on a 12-yard scamper. Brandon Duncan's extra point kick gave the Gators a 7-6 advantage. Savoie was 3-for-3 in his start for 41 yards and Jordan had one other carry good for 26 yards in the 75-yard drive.
Savoie ended the night hitting on 11 of 16 passes for 121 yards and completed balls to six different receivers. Zach Kahre and Chris Bowman both had three catches for the Gators. Bowman finished with 56 yards and Kahre had 30 yards.
Terrell Jordan led the ground attack for Shreve with 63 yards on just four carries and Payne tacked on 49 yards on six carries.
Captain Shreve opens the season at Parkway next Friday and Southwood is at Bossier.
The two freshman teams ended its two quarters in a 6-6 tie while the junior varsity ended with Southwood stopping Shreve on the last play for a thrilling 8-6 win.
