The Rich McClure era of Cathedral City High School football begins tonight./p>
Cathedral City High School's new football coach laughs with a junior varsity player's family members on Saturday, during an event at the school.
The new head coach takes over the struggling program, which hosts Brawley at 7.
McClure spoke to the Cathedral City Sun about the team and the season's first game.
Question: What's Brawley look like?
Answer: They have good speed. Their quarterback has a lot of experience. Their two linebackers are very good at reading offenses. They're pretty hard-nosed football players. They've got a few basic things they like to do, but they do them well.
How do you beat them?
For us, the thing is to have success early and get them to try and change what they do, and they're pretty stubborn about that. We're going to give them more of a physical game than they think. Our turnover ratio is on the plus side.
Did you have a scrimmage?
Yeah, last Friday against Yucca Valley.
Who's your quarterback?
Jake Garcia, he's the only returning guy from last year. He's done a great job all summer long learning the spread offense. He's real athletic and runs the option well. Our biggest thing is getting our line to gel.
Who's your running back?
We have two juniors: Guillermo Chicas and Manny Caldillo.
What do you like about them?
They catch the ball good out of the backfield and they're tough kids. They're not overly big and not overly fast, but they do a good job of reading the offensive line -- they're pretty good at that.
