Coach restoring tradition to team

Bill  Byron    The  Cathedral  City  Sun

Rich McClure is trying his best to change things on the Cathedral City High School football team and re-establish a former glory for the Lions.

One of the first things McClure is doing along those lines is throwing a kickoff breakfast for the team and their parents Saturday.

He hopes it will become a tradition, but at the very least, it is something new and different.

"We've got to make changes -- time will tell how effective they will be," said McClure, the Lions' new head coach who comes from the San Jacinto High football staff.

The breakfast will be a potluck, and he expects close to 300 people will attend, including the 90 players on his roster.

"I have yet to meet the parents and I'm asking the kids to get up in front of the group and tell everyone what their legacy is going to be to the school," McClure said.

Also speaking at the breakfast will be Athletic Director Todd Diliberto and Cathedral City Mayor Pro Tem Bud England.

The breakfast begins at 9:30 a.m. in the small gym at Cathedral City High School and will end around 11:30 a.m. Dress is casual.

Another change McClure has made is having the team return to silver helmets with a Lion logo on them.

The team had worn blue helmets for the past few seasons.

The Lions have not won more than four games in a season since 2004, and the past two years have managed to win only two games, while losing 18.
