Scott Matthews has resigned as the boys' basketball coach at Clarksville High School.

The Clarksville Community Schools Corporation board accepted his letter of resignation Tuesday night. Matthews coached the Generals for six years and compiled a 61-66 record, including 9-12 last season.

Matthews has coached for 12 seasons, with previous stops at Shawe Memorial and Austin, and has a 123-119 overall record. In 2001-02 he guided Austin to the Class2-A semistate with Indiana All-Star Anthony Winchester, who went on to star at Western Kentucky University.

Matthews graduated from New Washington in 1989. Coached by his father, Jim, he played with twin Jamie and helped lead the Mustangs to two sectional championships. He ranks fourth on New Washington's career list with 1,376 points.

He will remain at Clarksville as a business teacher. Athletic director Troy Mitchell is accepting applications.

Football

Providence will honor coach Gene Sartini before Friday night's game with New Albany as he starts his 40th season.

Members of the 1971 Pioneers team, Sartini's first with the school, will be recognized during pregame ceremonies. Other past teams, including the 1973 and '93 semistate champions and the 25th reunion team from 1985, will be introduced at various home games this season.

Sartini joined Providence for the 1971-72 school year as a teacher and coach. He taught history, health and physical education for more than 30 years before retiring from the classroom.

Sartini was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2004. He is the state's fourth-winningest active coach (and 13th all-time) with a 273-164 record.

Girls' basketball

Floyd Central graduate Madeline Richards was named coach at Lanesville. She replaced Bill Krammes, who was 38-51 in five seasons at the school.

Richards was a graduate assistant at Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina before joining Joe Voelker's staff at Floyd Central last year. She played in college at Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee.

Volleyball

New Albany is No.3 and Floyd Central No.4 in the first Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 4-A poll. Other ranked area teams include Silver Creek (No.10 in 3-A), Brownstown (No.2 in 2-A) and Springs Valley (No.9 in ClassA).

Boys' cross country

North Harrison is No.12 and Perry Central No.19 in the first Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches poll.
