HS Notebook: Tiger Run cross country, boys' tennis, volleyball

By  Jody  Demling      The  Courier-Journal

The Tiger Run cross country meet is always a good early-season indicator of which teams and individuals will be among the state's best.

This year will be no different.

St. Xavier coach Chuck Medley said he has teams from four states and some of the best from each of the three classes in Kentucky in Saturday's event.

The boys' varsity race is slated for 9:30a.m. and the girls' varsity for 10:15 at the old River Road Country Club near Zorn Avenue.

"It's pretty loaded," Medley said.

The boys' field will include the top three teams in the boys' Class 3-A poll, along with Nos.1 and 2 from 2-A and four top-10 teams from ClassA.

Host St. Xavier is No.1 in 3-A, followed by Butler and Trinity. Also in the meet are 3-A No.6 Eastern, No.8 Manual and No.9 Grant County.

North Oldham, ranked No.1 in 2-A, and No.2 South Oldham are also running, along with Class A No.2 St.Henry. Bishop Brossart, Burgin and Holy Cross are also ranked.

In the girls' race, Manual is the No.1 team in 3-A and is among the favorites, along with No.4 Sacred Heart, No.5 Assumption and No.6 Oldham County.

Other competitors include the top four teams in 2-A -- South Oldham, Christian Academy, North Oldham and Boyle County -- along with No.8 Bell County and Class A No.1 St.Henry.

"What's exciting about this year" is there are also teams from Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee in the field, Medley said.

Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence are the Indiana representatives. Beavercreek, Ohio, and Ravenwood, Tenn., will also run.

Harp gets 300th victory

Sam Harp of Danville High School became the sixth high school football coach in Kentucky to win 300 career games.

Danville beat Mason County last week to give Harp, who has won seven state titles since taking over at Danville in 1988, a 300-94 record in 30 seasons.

There are three active coaches ahead of Harp: Bell County's Dudley Hilton (second all-time at 333), Belfry's Phillip Haywood (third at 327) and St.X's Mike Glaser (fifth at 310).

Bob Schneider, who retired last season, sits atop the list with 345 victories. Former Male coach Bob Redman is fourth at 317.

Other news

North Bullitt junior soccer player Halee Heltsley has scored eight goals in her first three games of the season.

Two of the state's best girls' soccer teams will compete on Sunday when Sacred Heart hosts Assumption at 4:30p.m.

Mercy will host Sacred Heart in a volleyball match at 6p.m. on Sunday. Mercy has won the past two state-title games, both against the Valkyries.
